Pepenbury provides essential care and support for nearly 150 disadvantaged adults both residential and day care. Cornford Lane runs through the centre of their facilities causing constant concerns of road safety for the residents and the 70 staff.
In addition, many Pepenbury residents use Cornford Lane to walk to the nearby shops, and many staff - who do not have cars - also walk along the lane to get to and from work. There is no provision for pedestrians and no speed limit. Both groups are in continual danger and three members of staff have suffered injury as a result of speeding traffic - many more have had or have witnessed near-misses.
" Our son is autistic and goes to Pepenbury daily and runs risk of being knocked down every day due speed and thoughtlessness of fast driving" - Mr & Mrs P (West Malling).
It is some measure of the dangers of the lane that Pepenbury's insurers specifically disallow the use of any vehicle in the longer and narrower part of the lane.
It simply cannot be right that these vulnerable members of our society can be left equally vulnerable to the dangers of unrestricted traffic. If the lane was closed to through traffic then the people cared for at Pepenbury would not only be protected from injury but would be able to walk and enjoy the full length of the lane that is currently out of bounds because it is simply too dangerous.
Pepenbury support making Cornford Lane a No Through Road.
